History

Beginning in 2020, at the start of the Coronavirus pandemic, Oakley neighbors came together to start something that was bigger than any one person or family. In the beginning, the Fairview Road Resilience Garden operated with only a handful of people and with some volunteer days, as was allowed by COVID regulations. 100% of the produce grown was donated to Bounty and Soul to be repackaged and provided to the community! This model provided resilience in multiple ways: by giving those involved a purpose during a challenging time in our collective history, and by providing fresh local food to those who could use it.

The garden operated in this manner until 2023, at which point we saw a need to pivot to a different model. The Resilience Garden now operates as a more traditional community garden, where neighbors can sign up to have their own plot in the garden. However, it remains a gathering point for the community and continues to provide resilience for those who spend time here

2024 Season!

As we advance into 2024, there are a few updates to the operating model and ways to be involved.

  • There are now raised beds in the garden, providing a very tangible delineation for those who wish to have a plot and grow their own produce. If you are interested in having your own plot, please contact us HERE.

  • Volunteer days will continue to be available in the form of “gleaning”. We realize that time is precious and that sometimes it becomes too much to harvest everything in the peak of summer. These volunteer days can be used to pick what is needed and it can be sold at the farm stand or donated. If you are interested in being included on communications about volunteer days, connect with us HERE.

  • We plan to create a farm stand along Fairview Road where produce can be sold to the community. We also plan to have flowers and/or pumpkins available either at the farm stand or as a you-pick option. Keep an eye out!

  • There will be other community events hosted in the garden throughout the year (movies in the garden, cooking demos, etc.). These will be announced via the garden's Facebook page. Let us know if you would be interested in coordinating and hosting an event in the garden.
